The custom was that the last words that were said before going to sleep on the last day of the month were "Hares,hares,hares" and the first words to be uttered on awakening on the first day of the month were "White rabbits,white rabbits, white rabbits." Many old memberrs of English family confirm thios as the practice although there is not a lo Not likely in that it only applied once a month. It was said to bring good luck, similar to turning coins over with the new moon.t of information as to what lays behind the practice. Some cynics suggest that it was designed to shut the kids up when they went to bed.

My mother was from the South and she always taught us to say "Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit" and turn around three times as soon as we got out of bed on New Year's Day for good luck.
