Subject: blood in the urin

Question
Male, 67, BPH, on occasion I will urinate red blood at the beginning of urination. It has been several months since late occurrence. 2 yrs. a go when I smoked it was more often & it happened when I took aspirin, or Avadart. It does not occur as often since I quit smoking. My Doc's. will not give me an reasons why this is happening, and what can be done about it. It seams all they want to do is get me in the office so they can apply for Medicare. Will Green light, or microwave help reduce the prostate. All the doctors want to do is check for cancer.

Answer
Hal:

I don't agree that the only thing your physicians want to do is drag you to the office for the sole purpose of being able to charge Medicare.  That's not what the vast majority of physicians do.  You are having a problem that could potentially be serious.  Do you know where the blood is coming from?  Are you 100% sure it's not from the kidney or stones or a bladder cancer?  You have a history of smoking which makes bladder cancer more likely.  If the bleeding is from the prostate, Avodart might help but if you're also having urinary trouble a greenlite might be reasonable.  Checking for cancer is necessary before a greenlite or microwave or Avodart treatment can be started.  If you haven't already done so, consult a urologist for the specifics.
