Question
this occured yesterday, im 33 male, past week i been eating alot of bad outside food along with a good amount of ice cream..i became costipated yesterday morning, so i took 2 metamucil fiber wafers and prune juice, i was able to goto the bathroom soon after, but later that evening my stomach and chest erupted with gas noises and i wasn't able to release them plus my penis started up with this slight pain/burning. so i was advised to take two tums for the gas, which i did and next morning i was fine. but my penis still hurt and it hasn't gone away since.. i dipped in a hot tub for about 20mins before and if feels slightly better. i always use condoms, dont take medication, not allegic to anything, i had blood work done a month ago and im perfect.. it has to be my bad eating, what would you suggest, besides eating healthy? i've had this burning before.

thanks joey

Answer
Joey, although your eating habits are apparently poor, I doubt they have anything to do with the penile burning you are experiencing.  You really have not clarified if the penile burning is on the outside (skin area) or the inside (in the urinary canal - the so called urethra).  This makes a great deal of difference as to possible diagnoses.

I suspect you mean the outside skin of the penis is burning.  There are many possible causes for this.  It requires a physical examination of the penis to look for evidence of redness, rash, or specific points of tenderness.  If there is no obvious lesion on the penis, just a non-desrcript burning, the most likely cause would be an irritation from something your penis is contacting (contact dermatitis). This means that the penis is coming in contact with something it is allergic to.  The common products would be bathing soap, detergent used for laundering, industrial products on the hands that are not washed thoroughly before urinating, feminine hygiene substances your partner might use, sexual lubricants, condom preservatives, etc.  First, do not bathe, take only showers.  In a bath tub, soap residue often wash into the distal urethra and any soap may cause irritation.  Next use a mild soap such as Dove or a "basis" soap.  For laundry detergents, one of the more mild is Ivory Snow.  If you use chemicals at work or with a hobby, wash you hand properly before voiding.  The process is really one trial and error.

If the burning is inside the penis, the generally indicated an inflammation or infection either in the urethra (urethritis) or prostate (prostatitis) gland.  If your symptoms persist, I suggest that you seek consultation with a urologist so that a proper history & physical examination be done.  Only after a specific diagnosis is made, can a specific treatment plan be recommended.  Good luck.
