Question QUESTION: i am a 64yrs athlete in excellent health other then my prostate-bladder-- my mistake waited to long--saw urologist once says ill need intermittent catherization now and i want a turp not drugs to shrink my prostate.i have folley in me 2.5 months. when i took the folley out the first time-leakage- i had a small stream every hour went to sleep and couldnt go--back in emergency another folley put in.how long can keep a folley in?--i have insurance problems may be another month or more for bladder test learn intermittent and turp---in time after turp and self-catherization can my bladder come back to somewhat normal so i dont need to catherize--i eat great and exercize--blood pressure 105over65 triglicerides 40 resting pulse 50 thankyou--the very best always arnie frankel
ANSWER: Arnie:
Your question is how long can you keep a foley in. The answer is forever, although usually it's changed about every 30 days. Intermittent catheterization is a reasonable alternative. TURP may solve your problem as long as your bladder muscle is still reasonably healthy. A bladder pressure test (CMG) would determine the strength or health of the bladder muscle. If this shows good muscle tone, then a TURP or similar procedure is highly likely to be successful. If the bladder muscle is marginal or damaged, then the surgery may not be sufficient to provide normal or safe voiding.
It's impossible to determine from the information provided if you'll be able to void normally after surgery. It all depends on the underlying health of the bladder muscle. The healthier it remains, the better the chances the surgery would work.
I agree with you that medication is not very helpful in your particular situation and that the TURP type surgery gives you the best chance of eventually voiding normally.

QUESTION: have foley in --what causes pain in penis and when i sit on a chair or walk around--i feel no pain after a few minutes when i lie down--urine is clear--taking detrol la 4mg. which was working for spasms and pain but now when i walk oe sit isnot--have no insurance and trying to get into the system which is broke---thankyou--arnie
Answer Arnie:
The pain in the penis is either a spasm or from pressure from sitting on the urethral tube that is between the skin and the prostate. Detrol will not help pain; it's strictly for spasms.
I don't have alot of advice on getting help without insurance. Try a public or teaching hospital.
