Topic: Urology

Expert: Arthur Goldstein, M.D.
Date: 8/28/2008
Subject: semen viscosity

Question
I'm 51 years old, exercise, eat healty foods and take care of myself.  My sex
drive has decreased slightly, which I understand is a normal factor of aging.
When I masturbate, my semen volume has also decreased, which I
understand.  But I don't understand why my semen is also less viscous.  I
would expect that ejaculation too often would think the semen.  But even if I
abstain from sexual activity for weeks, it is still the consistency of milk,
though it was once like Vasoline,  Is this just aging, or diet related or what?

Answer
Mark, you are correct in that the semen volume gradually decreases with age as  does one's libido.  A more watery consistency of the semen is a commonly noted observation but is not a sign of prostate or other urologic disease.  Normally, the semen is opaque and somewhat viscous.  However, if allowed to stand for more than 5 minutes, it begins to liquify due to normally occurring enzymes in the semen.  This action is necessary to allow the sperm to move more easily through the fluid toward their appointed goal - fertilizing the egg.  If your semen is watery immediately after ejaculation, there is no solid medical explanation for this other than it may be due to a state of excellent hydration. It does not otherwise seem to be related to diet.   If one ejaculates infrequently, this usually leads to excessively thick semen often with the presence of gel like material.  Again, this does not imply disease.  Good luck.
