Subject: swelling and ache after hydrocelectomy
Question I am a 25 year old male and I had a left inguinal hernia repair and
hydrocelectomy about 6 weeks ago. I still have a good deal of swelling in my
testicle, as well as the the cord that runs up into my abdomen. This cord
feels swollen, tight and hard and my testicle is sucked up close to my body
and does not hang normally like my right one. Also, if I lie down on my back
for an extended period of time, the swelling and tightness will loosen up
some and my testicle will almost return to normal size (except for some
swollen tissues around it), but once I stand up and move around some, it
goes back to being tight and close to my body and does not hang normally.
It also has a dull ache that comes and goes, usually flaring up after excercise.
I guess my question is this: are all these things normal to be experiencing 6
weeks out from surgery? Will my testicle return to normal size and hang in
my scrotum like the right one? How long can this take? Should the swelling
be going up and down like this? Thanks for your help...
Answer Kyle, the symptoms you describe are quite common after a hydrocelectomy. The reason that the spermatic cord is thickened, is that it is composed of multiple tissue layers. During surgery, blood, serum & edema fluid infiltrates these layers. The swelling of the testicle is due to a similar process in the area where the hydrocele sac was dissected off of the testicle. It takes some time for this process to gradually resolve, usually in the range of 3 months. You may note some degree of permanent scarring around the testicle. However, all of these sites typically soften over time. The final result is that your tesicle should hang more normally (but may always be slightly different) and the tightness & dull ache should abate. Good luck.
