Subject: SWOLLEN LIP OF PENIS

Question
The bottom part of the lip of my penis appears swollen. I was diagnosed with HP-1, very mild case, only one lesion under the foreskin. ( i am circumsized). The nurse used cryogenic treatment 2 x in one month. I have no other STD, i was tested, no discharge, inflammation or pain. The nurse sprayed liq nitrogen on the swollen part, and it scabbed a little. Still no pain. the end, bottom part of the lip appeared swollen to him too, but there appeared to be no lesion there. What could it be?

Answer
Jack, as you might imagine, for this type of problem it is not possible for me to make an exact diagnosis over the internet because of the inability to do a physical examination.  However, I shall try to help you.  Your question is a little confusing because if your were circumcised, the foreskin is essentially gone.  Genital warts (HPV or human papilloma virus) is often treated with liquid nitrogen but Herpes simplex (1 or 2) is not.  There is no HP-1 that I am aware of so I'll assume for the sake of discussion that you are referring to HPV.

There are several possible causes for swelling of the lip of the urethral meatus.  It may be that the nurse allowed some of the liquid nitrogen to spray on the meatus causing the swelling.  Other common causes include insect bites (spiders being the most common) and irritation from soaps and/or detergents used for bathing and doing laundry. In my experience, the process is self limited, clears on its own with time and requires no therapy.  If it persists, you might want to consider switching to a mild soap (such as Dove) & laundry detergent (such as Ivory Snow).  Good luck.
