Urology - 26 w/ erectile problems

Question
Hi Dr. Leslie,

I am a 26 year old male who has recently begun seeing a very beautiful young woman whom I like very much.  There is certainly no problem with attraction, however I am having issues getting and maintaining an erection.  I have a laundry list of things that are presumably counting against me.  These include a prescription of 450mg of Wellbutrin daily, anxiety which I have a clonazepam prescription for but only take sporadically when the anxiety gets to be too much, a long period of time since my last real sexual relationship (by real I mean not drunk bar hookups), and the real killer is that I am a heavy drinker.  I have avoided alcohol for the last 48 hours but it didn't seem to have made much (or any) difference last night.  Of course, with this happening time and again the performance anxiety has only increased.  Clearly stopping the alcohol consumption is number one.  But past that what can I do?  This is incredibly distressing and I worry that if this goes on too long she will likely lose interest in me.  Would taking a dose of the clonazepam before we get together help with the issue or hurt?  I do not drink when taking the clonazepam as that combination only leads to trouble.  Please help!

Answer
Chris:

Your psychological issues and treatments are likely to be the underlying cause of your problem.  Avoiding alcohol would be very helpful.  You should consult your family physician or consult a urologist for some help.  Something like Viagra is usually very effective in these situations, at least temporarily.
