Urology - Lump under skin on shaft of penis.

Expert: Stephen W. Leslie, MD - 11/7/2009

Question
I just found a lump under my skin while I was using the restroom. The lump is on the top of the shaft more to the right side of the top to be exact, just about 1 inch - 1 1/2 inch from the head of my penis. The skin on and around the lump is slightly darker than the rest of the skin on my shaft. When I run my finger over it, it feels almost smooth.I do not know if there is another but I do know that I masturbated and did not notice anything on bottom or this at all, until I urinated later in the today. Also right now there is no other 'lump' other than this one I've just described. My first thought was a sort of "cancer" or something. Then I was frighten at the thought of an STD. But I've only slept with one person in 3 years time. She was a virgin and completely clean and still is. My question is, "Is it the same as a 'cyst' or the other thing that was previously asked on this site?" "Will it be or become harmfull to me?" "What does this sound like or closely to what thing does it sound like it is or could be?"

Answer
Josh:

Obviously, I can't tell exactly what this is from just your description.  A vein or a cyst would be the most likely.  Penile cancer does not usually appear the way you describe.  You should contact your physician or consult a urologist for a definitive answer.
