Urology - crusty and burny

Expert: Stephen W. Leslie, MD - 11/6/2009

Question
My boyfriend has been complaining about his stinging penis. the tip burns during and just after urination and ejaculation. He also had a small "ring" of white flakiness at the tip which now looks more crusty or scab-like. he's been on an oral antibiotic and was told to put a fusidin cream on by his dr. it seemed to clear but the stinging and scab-like appearance are back. is this just a bad bacterial infection that needs more antibiotics or could it be something else, more serious? we have both been tested negative for HIV but I dis get vaginal thrush quite severely a few months ago. is it possible we're passing on the fungus back and forth? although we've both taken an oral anti-fungal and stopped using vaseline for lubrication.

Answer
Nadia:

While a fungal infection is possible, some other infection seems more likely.  Vaseline is not a good lubricant because it persists much too long and remains greasy.  A water soluble lubricant like K-Y jelly or Surgilube would be preferred for lubrication.  Consider a consult with a urologist or infectious disease specialist to sort this out for you.
