Urology - prostate cancer and septicemia
Expert: Stephen W. Leslie, MD - 11/6/2009
Question Dear Dr. Leslie,
My father is 86 and has had 3 bouts with prostate cancer.Initially he was treated with radiation, than 10 years later it reoccurred and he was treated with chemotherapy which left him impotent and incontinent. Presently, he has been hospitalized with a recurrent infection, I don't know if it is bladder, urinary or kidney infection. However, last night he was vomiting, shaking uncontrollably and burning up with fever and lost consciousness. He presented with septicemia and is on yet another intravenous antibiotic and none seems to be able to figure out what is going on. The Dr.keeps saying that he will keep treating the infections but a week ago he was at his urologist and he didn't have an infection. All of a sudden he is losing control of his bowel function. He has had bone scans and cancer wasn't present. I am besides myself as to what can be done or what other specialist we should go to. Please send me some advice as to what you would do if this was your father.
Thank you for any advice you can send me.
Rochelle
Answer Rochelle:
Obviously this is a complicated case. The source of the infections needs to be identified, if possible. If his current physicians are not having any luck in tracking down the source of his problem, a transfer to a tertiary care facility like Mayo Clinic or Cleveland Clinic might be a good idea if there is such a center near you.
