Urology - Discharge

Expert: Arthur Goldstein, M.D. - 1/12/2007

Question
Yesterday my boyfriend told me that he was having problems with his penis. He said that when he urinates that all of the urine does not come out. He said like something is stuck in there. Then after he finished using the bathroom. Clear, sticky discharge comes out right after. There is not any pain or anything. I went to the doctor to see if there was a problem with me. But she just gave me yeast infection medicine and told me to have him get tested. I have had STD's before and I am not experiencing any issues. What could be wrong with him and is it sexually transmitted. Please advise...

Answer
Tamika, there are a number of conditions that can cause your boyfriend's difficulty with urination and urethral discharge.  He may just have an inflammation of the prostate gland which often will cause a discharge of prostate fluid at the end of urination.  However, his symptoms and discharge could also be due to an STD such as Chlamydia or even gonorrhea (although the latter is usually accompanied by severe burning with urination and as well as a greenish-yellow thick discharge).  A yeast infection of the urethra is another, but less likely, possibility.   The only way to be sure, is for your friend to see a doctor (preferrably a urologist) and have the discharge cultured in order to identify the germs that might be present.  This is the only definitive way to determine if a STD is present.  Treatment in the form of antibiotics will probably be started by his physician who should also advise you if you need medication as well.    Good luck.
