Urology - blood in urine

Expert: Stephen W. Leslie, MD - 1/5/2007

Question
My son is 7 years old and has been urinating blood for about 1 1/2 years.  We have been to a urologist and a kidney specialist.  They have done numerous tests and still do not know the cause of the blood.  They want to do a biopsy but I'm not sure that I want that done.  My son usually complains about his head hurting and his stomach hurting before he starts peeing blood. I don't know if it can be related but I thought I would ask.
Thanks so much! Venetta

Answer
Urinating blood is certainly not normal.  In children, we worry about tumors, hypercalciuria and various anatomical abnormalities especially those involving the vascular structures.  A biopsy is not to be taken lightly in a 7 year old.

Get an opinion from a pediatric urologist. These are urologists who specialize in the special problems of children.  You can usually find them in the large university teaching hospitals.
