Have had prostate problems since my late 20's (now 40) and for some reason, in the last year, maybe unbearable stress on my body due to me being depressed and frustrated over my ex-wife's actions (I filed for divorce), my prostatitis has been with me all but a couple weeks here, a couple of weeks there. Discomfort sometimes, pain others, bloody ejaculations. Antibiotics not working for the first time ever.
Then I use an over-the-counter oral cleanser and eat nothing but broccoli and drink green tea and I heal.
Then too much stress, I don't know, and I have the problem again. Heal again.
Then it comes back again a few weeks later.
No healing.
Use the last of a Cipro generic and I'm healing but run out before I am totally discomfort-free and blood free.
Dr. Leslie, what do I do?
Thanks so much. Very grateful. Hope you are blessed in your life.

Answer First, consult a good urologist. This is not a condition that most primary care physicians are comfortable handling. Other treatments besides antibiotics include alpha blockers to open the urinary passage, hot sitz baths, anti-inflammatories (Advil, Motrin), avoidance of high potassium foods, caffeine and alcohol, etc.
Quercetin and a nutritional supplement called "PEENUTS" have shown some promise in treating prostatitis. Quercetin is available in most health food stores. PEENUTS is available from the internet at: www.peenuts.com.
