Used Cars/Buying a car Cash

Question
Hi Mr. Paulsen

I'm in the market right now for a car. Id like to purchase it from a private seller to avoid paying all those scam charges the dealer sticks to you.

What paperwork do I need from the seller to avoid getting ripped off.

What are some red flags to look for ? Fraud prevention advice ?

Also as far as payment options go, I really dont feel comfortable paying $3500 Cash to the private seller.

I was thinking paying with Money Order or with Cashier's Check but my parents laughed and said that wouldn't fly with the seller.

Thanks for your guidance,

steve"

Answer
Hi Steve

I agree there can be scam charges from a dealer, but if you study my website and get to understand how dealers operate you will be on a level playing field.

As for buying private read this link on my website to understand the difference between a dealer and a private seller     http://www.usedcartips.org/privatevsdealer.html

You did not mention your zip code, I therefore cannot tell you what paperwork should be in place, but here is a link where you should read and understand the DMV for your state as to what is needed selling or buying privately      http://www.usedcartips.org/DMV.html

Your parents are right, but then again there are uneducated buyers and sellers.

good luck
