Question
How can I verify  a check sent to me in the mail, after banking hours. Or "If a check sent to me is not legitimate, will I get in trouble?
I recently received a cashiers check that was counterfeit, I don't trust checks anymore and would like to know if they are authentic.

Answer
generally you can call the bank that it is drawn off of.  The bank i work at, on the automated system, has an option to enter the acct number and the dollar amount of the check to verify funds availability.  if you have an excessive amount of deposited checks being returned counterfeit, nsf, etc, they may close your acct as a loss prevention issue.

Michael,

I feel your comments were not justified.  This question appears to have answered all your questions you stated in your question.  You did not state that you didn't have an open bank account.  Like I stated in my answer, the instituion I work at offers this service, I cannot speak for other banks.  You asked me for advice, which I gave to you.  In the future, please make sure to put all the details in your questions before submitting them so we can answer them properly.  For reference, I have not run across a bank that will not give you funds availability information if you are the payee on a check.  You stated in your comments there should be a helpfulness box, which there is and you rated.

Thank you

Shane
