Question I have had an account at a local bank for over a year and a half now--and have just gotten to ask for a Visa check card. They did issue an ATM card. They are giving me all kinds of excuses about a complaint from Chexsystems, etc., etc. I believe that they are about to close my account. F.Y.I., I did send a letter to Chexsystems to ask about the complaint--have had no reply in about two months. I've also looked at the background of my bank and noted that it is having problems in the mortgage department--can this be a reason? No, I do not have any other kind account with this bank. Also, I have NEVER overdrawn my account or had a problem of that sort.
Answer Hi Bob,
I dont believe they can threaten to close your account if you already have one open. However, they can refuse a checkcard based on previous bank account history that has been reported to chexsystems. This could be an account that you had once yourself that resulted in bad standing or another account that you were a co signer on. For example if you were to co sign on a child's account and they were to overdraw it, you too would be reported to chexsystems. The mortgage crisis issue would have no impact on the banking side of things. This crisis is a nationwide issue, not just to any bank. I work for National City myself. We are feeling a little bit of that mortgage crisis as well but has had no impact on regular deposit banking. Most banks have their mortgage and regular banking side divided so one does not effect the other. It is not uncommon to be given an atm card only if there is a chexsystems record out there. I understand that you wrote them a letter and havent heard back, they truly are the only ones who can rectify this for you.
