Using Banks and Bank Accounts/find a old check

Question
My father bought a piece of property from his brother in 1991. The heirs of his brother are denying this, even though we have a quit claim deed registered. We need a copy of the check that would have been on either peoples bank or farmers and merchants bank in TN both which are different banks now. When I have talked to the banks they tell me that they do not hold them over 10 years. Is their anyway possible to get proof of this check?

Answer
Jina, I'm not sure you will be able to retrieve a copy this old. However, your father did have a deed that I presume was properly signed by his brother and properly recorded. I'm not sure the burden should be on you to trace payment. You might ask the brother's heirs to search (if they haven't already) the account records of the brother. Jim
