Using Banks and Bank Accounts - Closing a garnished account

Expert: Shane - 4/3/2009

Question
I have recently had a Child Support garnish "freeze" put on my checking account where no money can be drawn out and no checks will be honored. Can I and how do I go about closing this account ?

Answer
legally, the bank cannot allow you to close that account until the garnish is removed.  Please note that the child support offices go through your social security number, it would only be a matter of time before a new opened account would be located and also garnished.
