Normally banks with courteous tellers will not cash your post dated check as a gesture. However many tellers are not knowledgable and care less especially in the US. However it is not illegal for them to cash it - it is more of a gesture not to.

It is not illegal for you to issue post dated checks either and if the bank told you it was illegal to issue pdc they were not right in saying so,unless you intentionally wrote a PDC with the idea of defrauding the vendor.

If you informed the vendor that your check was post dated and should not be deposited till the date on the check the vendor is responsible to pay the bank fees back to you - but again if you dont have anything in written they can deny that you told them it was a PDC and should not be deposited.
