Using Banks and Bank Accounts - reissuance of a check

Expert: Jim Meadows - 2/10/2003

Question
I worked for a company several years ago and they paid me with a check.  Today I was going through some old papers and found a check I forgot to cash that is about 520.00.  ( I worked two jobs and must have forgot about that check back then)  I certainly could have used it.  In any event, there is verbage on the bottom that states it is void after 60 days.  If I contact them do they have to reissue it or can they say."Tough Luck"?

Thank you

Answer
Cathy, The first thing I would reccommend you doing is to deposit the check into your account by mail or after hours deposit. You will know soon whether or not to go further.

If the check is not accepted, then I suggest that you approach your previous employer. The issue is a matter of proof that they owe you the money. If you approach them reasonably and allow them time to research the issue they should be willing to reissue you check. I suggest that you first write them, explaining the situation, enclosing a copy of the check (both sides) and request that the check be reissued. Good luck, Jim
