Question
QUESTION: Dear expert,

I would like to claculate the direction to the nearest coast from various locations in the sea. When i bring up my spatial analyst toolbar there is no option for direction. I am using 9.2 ArcGIS with all extensions (I hope !). This puzzles me. Can you help ?

Regards Juliane

ANSWER: Juliane,
You should have both nearest coast and locations as shape files.
Then, try ARCTOOLBOX -> ANALYSIS TOOLS -> PROXIMITY -> NEAR
Good luck

QUESTION: Dear sajadi,

many thanks for your help, it worked ! But in order to interpret the angles, I need the direction of true north I think, how can I create a symbol on my map that shows this ?

Regards,

juliane

Answer
Juliane,
In Arcmap main menu , click on View and select Layout View (second item
from the top. Layout View is for preparing presentation maps.
To choose a north arrow, click "Insert" and then "North Arrow". You will have several shapes of north arrow that you can put on the map on your desired location.
