You have it wrong and backwards.

After Van Halen put out there 1st album with Sammy Hagar David Lee Roth put out his solo album called Eatím and smile. The title Eat Em and smile was in reference to his new band being better and blowing away Van Halen. Van Halen then countered with their next album ou812. In reference to In your face DaveÖ  Yes, Eddie might of said something like that to Guitar Magazine but that wasn't the reason for the name of the albums.

To correct Andrea's response, it was OU812 (released 1988) that was actually the response to DLR's Eat Em and Smile (released 1986) and not the other way around.

Andrea is pretty close. But OU812 (1988) was in response to David Lee Roth's 1st solo LP, Eat Em And Smile (1986). DLR had a himself looking like a cannibal on his cover. I've hear this was a playful response - Oh, You Ate One Too?

Van Halen
