AboutGeoff Wickens Expertise I have a fairly vast knowledge of the history of The City of Vancouver, BC. All my knowledge has been learned through on-hands experience. I am apt to answer most any question in regards to the history of the city, the construction of its bridges and the history behind some of its buildings.
Experience I drove cab for 5 years and in that time gave numerous city tours with full historical backgrounds. I have a thirst for history and an appetite for knowledge.
Question Hi, few days ago, i heard about a renovation for the burrard street towers. Since those towers have been closed for years, they are renovating it so that it will be open to the public. Is this true and do you know who will be responsible for the renovation? I appreciate it a lot if you respond to this question.
Answer The only renovations I have heard about is talk about reducing the number of lanes on the bridge to 5 to allow widening of the sidewalks and bike lanes in either direction.
The Burrard Bridge is a heritage site and the towers would never be open to the public for just that reason. A lot of work would be needed to ensure that the bridge could handle to visitors walking to and from the bridge as well as the foot traffic inside the towers and the walkway between the two towers. Also..... where would the visitors park (at either end of the bridge).
The idea of the towers being used as a tourist site is not feasable at the present moment. There may be plans in the works for 2010, but according to my sources in city hall, nothing is planned yet.
