About Geoff Wickens
Expertise
I have a fairly vast knowledge of the history of The City of Vancouver, BC. All my knowledge has been learned through on-hands experience. I am apt to answer most any question in regards to the history of the city, the construction of its bridges and the history behind some of its buildings.

Experience
I drove cab for 5 years and in that time gave numerous city tours with full historical backgrounds. I have a thirst for history and an appetite for knowledge.

Question
Hi Geoff,  We are considering a ski holiday at Whistler in January 2008.  We are intermediate skiers and have skied in New Zealand and Australia.  I have just read in a brochure that the average minimum temperature at Whistler in January is -17 degrees.  The coldest temperature we have skied in is -6.  When the temperature is -17 or colder, is this too cold to ski or is it bearable.  Also is wind chill a factor over there during ski season.

Thanks

Cheers  Kevin and Cindy - Brisbane Australia

Answer
Believe it or not - I am not a skier, however, I did get some information for you.

If -17C was unbearable, than the rest of Canada would be in serious trouble in the winter.  -30C (or colder) is not unheard of anywhere east of the rockies from Nov - Mar.  I was in Edmonton this spring and on May 1, it was snowing and -7.  3 months later it was +28C.

As for the wind chill, well, that all depends on how fast you go downhill!

I am sure you will have a great time!

Thanks!

Geoff!
