About Geoff Wickens
Expertise
I have a fairly vast knowledge of the history of The City of Vancouver, BC. All my knowledge has been learned through on-hands experience. I am apt to answer most any question in regards to the history of the city, the construction of its bridges and the history behind some of its buildings.

Experience
I drove cab for 5 years and in that time gave numerous city tours with full historical backgrounds. I have a thirst for history and an appetite for knowledge.

Question
I have in mind arranging a trip to USA/Canada sometime this year. The intention is to fly from UK to Seattle stay for 2/3 days and then get a hire car to travel to Vancouver then to Calgary/Banff and then back to Seattle. All within a fortnight. Do you think that this would be a bit ambitious and what would be the best time of the year to do this trip. I did a trip in June 1997 starting in Toronto then to Ottawa down into New York State round Lake Ontario ending up back in Toronto via Niagra Falls.(All within 14 days) How would the proposed trip compare with that one. I am 64 and retired and my great ambitiion is to see the Rockies.

Regards

Alan

Answer
Hi Alan.  Thanks for the questions.  While this does not fall into my field of registered expertise, I am in the trucking industry and will be able to answer your questions.

First off.... to drive (just drive, no time for sleep, meals and photographs) from Seattle to Vancouver will take 3 hours and then from Vancouver to Calgary will take another 12.  Total round trip (dont forget, this is solely driving time): 30 hours.  I would recommend 72 hours as you will want time to eat, sleep and take pictures of the beautiful trip.  Taking 3 days off your planned 14 leaves you 11 days to spend in Seattle, Vancouver and Calgary (plan it as you wish).  The time for you to drive this trip would be from May to September.

Hi Alan.........

You ask me a question back in Jine and I have to ask...

Thought I would say hi and ask if you have made your trip yet... and if so. how did you like it?  I like listening to tourists talk about the place I call home... and some of the things I take for granted (like being able to see the ocean, for me it's not a big deal, but for someone from the middle of Canada, or another country, it may be a VERY big deal!)

Lemme know!

Thanks

Geoff
