About Geoff Wickens
Expertise
I have a fairly vast knowledge of the history of The City of Vancouver, BC. All my knowledge has been learned through on-hands experience. I am apt to answer most any question in regards to the history of the city, the construction of its bridges and the history behind some of its buildings.

Experience
I drove cab for 5 years and in that time gave numerous city tours with full historical backgrounds. I have a thirst for history and an appetite for knowledge.

Question
Hello,

My wife and I will be visiting Vancouver this February, one for business, one a
tag along (me). We are from Michigan and are used to the cold  -3 or so C).
We will be there for 4 days, with one day open for full visiting, the other days
only in the evening as business allows.
What would you recommend seeing/doing under these circumstances?
We love to walk, drink coffee, pretty laid back, moderate to low budget.
Will layers of clothes do or will it feel colder with the mist?
The business will pay for the Empire Landmark Hotel or the Coast Plaza Hotel,
any thoughts on which to choose?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, anything that could make our
voyage north more enjoyable.

Thanks a bunch,
Mark

I have lots of relatives who live in Windsor, Ontario.

Answer
You guys get it colder there than we do!  In Feb, the lows are usually around 4C (40F).

If you're budget is low - moderate, I would suggest the Coast Plaza ... only becuase it is close to some cheaper things to do.  The Empire is on Robson St and is in the heart of the fashion district (selling, not making).  Robson Street is the place to see and be seen and the Empire is in the middle of the strip.

The Coast Plaza is near Stanley Park - the largest urban forest / park in North America at over 1000 acres (http://www.seestanleypark.com).  If you like walking, go around the seawall.  It is a walking and cycling path (divided, bikes on one side, walkers on the other) that goes around the park for 6 miles and gives you a FANTASTIC view of English Bay (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-2801842-english_bay_vancouver-i), the Lions Gate Bridge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lions_Gate_Bridge), Burrard Inlet (http://www.vancouveraerials.com/flt2/flt2part1.htm).

In Stanley Park, you can visit the Aquarium (I think it's $10 per adult).  You can see our orcas (killer whales), beluga whales and a myriad of other water mammals as well as the underwater variety inside.  It is a day trip in itself!  www.vanaqua.org

As for clothing ... it's colder in Michigan than it is here.  What mist?  If you're on the ocean maybe ... Are you talking about rain?  If so, bring an umbrella; it does get wet out here that time of year.

denman Street (the closest busy street to the Plaza) is full of coffee shops, mind you, you will be downtown, and IT IS one big coffee shop (Starbucks on every corner - we love our coffee out here).
