Expert: Lauri Ordway Date: 5/11/2008 Subject: blocked cartoid artery in the neck
Question My husband had cancer of the larynx and was operated on last June 2007. He has never had blood pressure problems nor heart problems. They removed his larynx and lymph nodes on right side of neck. There was a problem in the surgery that no one would discuss. He was in surgery an hour and a half longer than normal. He has had ct scans since the surgery but no one has mentioned anything about a blocked cartoid artery. This february he started passing out two three times a day. we have had more tests and found that his left cartoid artery is 100% blocked. The right artery is ok. The doctor who did the surgery finally told me that there was some excessive bleeding and that he nicked an artery. Could the doctor have nicked the artery and then stitched it up which is what is causing the blockage? My husband is only 57 years old and has always had pretty good health, not overweight but did smoke.
Answer Well this is sad, I am sorry. Anything can and does happen in surgery. You should ask for a second opinion, have your husbands records INCLUDING the opertive report sent to another vascualr surgeon. If there is even a tiny opening in the carotid artery, it may be possible to repair. Make sure all the records are sent tho so the new doc can see what happened in the operation. Lauri
