Vascular Surgery - deep vein thrombosis

Expert: Lauri Ordway - 10/27/2009

Question
I am an American living in China. I have been being treated here for thrombosis for over a year. The doctor says I shouldn't fly, but should go somewhere that laser surgery is available. I s this surgery done in Taiwan? Where would be the best place to go? (I have no insurance, so the expense is an issue) Are there other kinds of treatment options? They have been giving me warfarin and another medicine for over 12 months without much change.

Answer
as far as i know, there is no laser for deep vein thrombosis. The main treatment for DVT is medicine (usually warfarin)  which will thin the blood and allow it to flow more easily.

Patients are encouraged to move around as much as they can. Compression stockings are often worn to cover the length of the whole leg to give support to the veins and reduce swelling.
