Subject: Deep venous insufficiency

Question
I am a 36 year old female. I am 5ft. 4 in tall and weigh around 155. Several years ago I was diagnosed with Chronic venous insufficiency of the deep veins in my leg. Something to do with reflux at the sapheno- popliteal veins. They just keep telling me I have some reflux in the deep system. Last year my doctor closed my lesser saphenous  vein with the laser, she said that would help with some of the pain and swelling in my leg. I have also had several sclerothearpy treatments. I have been told that all of this has been done to try and correct my superficial system problems, but I have read a lot on my condition and won't varicose veins rapidly form again if you have deep venous insufficiency? They keep telling me that my leg is looking much better, every time i have the sclerotherapy done they use the ultrasound. So for the past year I haven't seen any outward change just with my symptoms. So will these treatments help my leg for a while? This last sclerotherapy session was the first one to take care of the veins that are noticeable on my leg. So everything else has been medically necessary. I still get some swelling and heaviness in the leg towards the end of the day, but it is does feel much better and so far doesn't seem to swell as much as before I had all of this done. I was also told that my greater saphenous would probably give me trouble at some point, nothing to worry about now. I have been told I should be wearing compression stockings for the rest of my life but these are terrible to someone that is young and active like myself. Is horse chestnut or daflon something that I could take instead of wearing the compression stockings? Sorry to ask so many questions but I am always trying to get many different opinions about treatment options.

Answer
are you SURE the DEEP veins have insufficiency? not the superficial system?
veins reform (called neo-vessels) no matter what but yes, if there veins removed or eliminated, this can happen more quickly.
there is no scientific data on horse chestrnut etc that says it helps.
what part of your leg are they injecting? above or below the knee? Lauri
