My state laws require physicians to abide by HIPAA regulations and patient privacy laws, please do not include any personal identifiable information in your question as this is a public forum. Any questions identifying an individual's full name, address, telephone number, specific area of residence, or date of birth would be rejected. This also pertains to information regarding minors. My advice would be to only include relevant data such as age, sex (Male, Female, etc), weight (if this is pertinent to the question), medications (if this is pertinent to the question), and sexuality (if this is pertinent to the question). I am only providing this service as an education of medical disorders to the general public.**

Question
Hi John,

I just have a quick question. It's more about the test than HIV. I went in to have blood drawn four days ago. The nurse slipped when putting in the needle, and now 4 days later I still have a HUGE bruise, yellow with blue spots, about 3 inches in diameter on my arm. It doesn't seem infected - it's just surprisingly large. Can a bruise that large come from a crappy drawing or is this something to be concerned about?

Answer
Hi Dave,

Yes, it is most likely due to the event. The bruise may take time to heal. If you have poor blood coagulation problems, then this is the most common problem seen. I would have your physician take a quick look at the problem as s/he is ultimately responsible for the nurse's action. S/he may order a simple blood test to determine if you have any blood disorder, as well.
