Answer Hi Jackie,
Molluscum contagiosum is a virus that is transmitted via direct skin contact. It has been known to transmit from sharing used clothes, towels, or equipments contaminated with sweat/fluids that was used by the infected individual. These materials need to be used immediately. Dried and washed contents are not able to transmit as the virus is dead. You definitely can get it by oral sex or skin-skin direct contact. Since this virus is self-limited, it heals after several months or years without the need of any treatment.
Most of the time, this virus is diagnosed by observation. Your statement suggests that your doctor is not 100% certain, thus a laboratory testing may assist of the diagnosis prior to treatment. Treatment is expensive without insurance. Your doctor can perform a simple cytology screening using a pap smear kit. Or, he/she may perform a MCV Antigen test, which is a blood test.
Your boyfriend should request a referral to a dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis and to receive proper treatment. The dermatologist can quicken the process with Cantharidin which is applied once every 3 weeks or cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen. There are antiviral oral medications available, however, these are reserved for immunosuppressed individuals (i.e. HIV, cancer, etc).
