Question Hi Lyndsay, I am not sure if this is STD related, but it is concerning my genital area. I am 21 years old. My history includes Clamydia (sp?) about four years ago, which was taken care of. Also, about two years ago, I found out I had HPV, which led to Grade 3 cervical cell displaysia. I had those cells "burned" off about a year ago and have had check-ups every three months and they are normal. I also have a Pap Smear each time I go and they all turn out normal. I had a complete STD blood test done in February which was clean.
My concern is regarding a piece of raised skin (almost like a skin tag) that is between my vaginal opening and anus. It is right on that part that goes between the two. I have noticed it for sure about two and a half years ago, maybe longer. The reason I am concerned about it now is because it seems to be getting bigger! At first it was just like a lump, but now I am actually able to "flick" it from side to side. When I first noticed it, I thought it was a scar of some sort. Do you have any idea what this could be and/or why it is getting bigger? Thanks for your help!
Answer Emily,
Its always a good idea to have things like this checked out by a doctor just to be sure, but I can almost certainly assure you its normal.
Most people have a sort of "flap" of skin between their genitals and anus. Its nothing to worry about. Since you have been to your doctor numerous times in the past couple of years, I'm sure they would have mentioned it if they saw anything out of the ordinary. (During a pelvic exam, this area is also very visible to your doctor)
The only possible reason for concern is that you are scared it might be getting bigger. Its possible that its just grown along with your developing body. If it continues to worry you, or changes at all, you should consult a doctor.
Until then, don't worry so much about it, you're normal!
