About Jordan
Expertise
My name is Jordan and I am an Epidemiology student at the University of Oklahoma. On top of that I am finishing my bachelors in M.D.S. public health and my minor is H.E.S. (health and exercise science). I have had many classes entirely devoted to sexually transmitted diseases, I am starting my independent study focusing on S.T.D distribution based on demographics, and have had a lot of hands on experience at the clinic that I am currently employed. I believe that sexually transmitted disease are a part of life, like any other non-sexually transmitted disease and can be controlled with knowledge. I would love to share this knowledge with anyone that is seeking it and encourage anyone that needs it to just ask, because I would love to help. Since this is a public forum, please refrain from using any personal information of yours or anyone else.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases - HIV testing

Expert: Jordan - 3/27/2009

Question
Hi,
today I took an AxSYM-HIV Ag/AB (Abbott) 4th gen test... about 34 days from the possible HIV infection... if the results are negative tomorrow.. am I safe?

Answer
The window period (period that you could be infected, but test negative) is around twenty-two days with a two or three generation test. They believe that the AxSYM-HIV Ag/AB 4th generation test decreases this number between six to twelve days. After this window period, which you are outside of, they say that the test is around 97.9 to 99.9 percent accurate. I read a study when it first came out comparing to other tests and it actually showed a 100% accuracy within around four thousand samples. So, it seems as if you are safe, but if you would like to re-test in about two to three weeks to ease your mind I would encourage that.
