About Jordan
Expertise
My name is Jordan and I am an Epidemiology student at the University of Oklahoma. On top of that I am finishing my bachelors in M.D.S. public health and my minor is H.E.S. (health and exercise science). I have had many classes entirely devoted to sexually transmitted diseases, I am starting my independent study focusing on S.T.D distribution based on demographics, and have had a lot of hands on experience at the clinic that I am currently employed. I believe that sexually transmitted disease are a part of life, like any other non-sexually transmitted disease and can be controlled with knowledge. I would love to share this knowledge with anyone that is seeking it and encourage anyone that needs it to just ask, because I would love to help. Since this is a public forum, please refrain from using any personal information of yours or anyone else.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases - Herpes Testing

Expert: Jordan - 3/16/2009

Question
I had protected sex a little more than 3 months ago. Even though i used a condom, before the condom was on our genitals did touch briefly. Two months after the incident i was diagnosed with an STI. Since then I have been worrying about other STD's that i may have and  don't know it, i have been tested for everything including HIV all were negative. however i don't think ive been tested for herpes. Its been more than 3 mos almost 4 and i don't have any signs of herpes. Is it worth getting tested for?

Answer
Usually, when you have an STD test, HSV (the herpes virus) antibodies are tested for, because it is such a common STD. Most likely if you were tested for syphilis or gonorrhea they tested for HSV too. If you where to have come into contact with the virus it is possible for it to lay dormant and for you not to show signs. People have even reported this happening for years. Therefore, it is worth you getting tested for, but it is possible you may have already been tested. If I were you I would call my doctor or clinic that I had the testing done and ask if they also tested for herpes.
