About Jordan
Expertise
My name is Jordan and I am an Epidemiology student at the University of Oklahoma. On top of that I am finishing my bachelors in M.D.S. public health and my minor is H.E.S. (health and exercise science). I have had many classes entirely devoted to sexually transmitted diseases, I am starting my independent study focusing on S.T.D distribution based on demographics, and have had a lot of hands on experience at the clinic that I am currently employed. I believe that sexually transmitted disease are a part of life, like any other non-sexually transmitted disease and can be controlled with knowledge. I would love to share this knowledge with anyone that is seeking it and encourage anyone that needs it to just ask, because I would love to help. Since this is a public forum, please refrain from using any personal information of yours or anyone else.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases - little red bumps on clitoris

Expert: Jordan - 3/9/2009

Question
Okay so recently I had been feeling these little bumps on my labia, they pretty much felt like when I shaved. They had the same skin color, and didn't really bother me. I did some research and found that they are more than likely oil glands, but I'm checking to see if it's anything else. Today, after working out I took a shower, I scratched a little and I think I might have scratched a bit too much because I irritated my clitoris. I saw some red around my clitoris and noticed two red bumps on the top of it, and two on the side. This is the first time I've noticed them at all. They might have been there as the same skin color but I might have irritated them. I later went to pee and it burned (I might've created a small cut with my nails, I'm sure). I'm being tested for STD's tomorrow- the works. I was just wondering if these could be because I irritated that area? The red bumps had never appeared before, and I'm really worried that it could be something bad. Any information would help. Thank you.

Answer
This is most likely sebaceous glands (sweat/oil glands). These are very common and most of the time they go unnoticed, because they will be the same color as the surrounding skin, but can be a white color. If you scratch them they will become easily irritate, which result in discomfort and burning during urination. Most of the time when they are first noticed the individual will think that they have an STD, most commonly genital warts. It is very easy to tell the difference between two. I am glad that you are getting an STD and most likely what you are describing is sebaceous glands.
