Sexually Transmitted Diseases - chlamydia

Expert: DW - 6/7/2009

Question
I have a boyfriend and usually we have unprotected sex.
So far I do not have any abnormal symptoms.
Is it true that a female can contract chlamydia without feeling any symptoms ?
How am I certain I have not contracted chlamydia ?
Do I have to take urine tests periodically to make sure I have no chlamydia ?

Answer
Hi Helen,

Thanks for your question. You are taking chances when you have protected or unprotected sex. By the way, there is really no such thing as 100% protected sex. You can always get an STD, sexually transmitted disease or get pregnant. If you don't want either of this, then please consider abstinence at this time of your life.

You would have to be tested for chlamydia to make sure you don't have it. Here is a website that just about tells you everything you would want to know.
http://www.cdc.gov/std/Chlamydia/STDFact-Chlamydia.htm

If you are tested negative, then are ok unless you get re-infected from someone. If you are positive, then get treated. In both cases, I would also advise abstinence in the future, as I mentioned.

Please email me at DWooley97@yahoo.com so we can talk more.

Sincerely,
Diane W.
