Sexually Transmitted Diseases - Constant Urination

Expert: Jack Schroder - 11/3/2004

Question
Is there any type of VD that can cause constant Urination. I have been having to urinate often for at least the last 10 years. Often is about 4-6 times a night. Most of the time very little comes out. I have been to a urologist and they were unable to find anything wrong with me. Also is there any type of VD named "chimes". I think I was diagnosed with this about 10 years ago, but I did not complete my pills, but the doc said I was okay.
Also my wife has Herpes. Will this affect my child if we have kids. Also how can I make sure that I don't catch it. We have been married for a year.

Answer
You do not give your age. But your first question suggests that your prostate is probably enlarged. Frequent urination is the most common complaint. Also the night time urination with little output suggests prostate enlargement.  Finding "nothing wrong" does not rule  out benign hypertrophy (enlargement) of the prostate. Go to a different urologist and see what he says. Or treat yourself. You can use saw palmetto extract as many others do and get some help. You can also use some of the common high blood pressure medicines to treat nightly urination problems.
To answer your question about herpes is more difficult. Chances that you will catch herpes from your wife are great, but that depends on many possibilities. To be safe use a condom. Always urinate after sexual intercourse. And wash your penis with soap, not a detergent. Life Buoy and Ivory are soaps. But herpes is a virus and heat is what kills viruses so use hot water. Of course, if your wife does not have a sore (lesion), you may be safe. Herpes is sneaky, so just be careful and hope.
Has your wife been treated within the past couple of years? Some years ago herpes was thought to be untreatable. Now it can be cured. If she has any doubt, she should see a doctor who can treat her. A Public Health Clinic is her best choice.
