Sexually Transmitted Diseases - Herpies

Expert: Kimberly - 10/18/2004

Question
I get cold sores maybe once or twice a year. My girlfriend has never had a cold sore. I know that cold sores are a type of herpies, but she fears that i could give her genital herpies if I give her oral stimulation during a time where it is possible for me to spreed the disease to others. Is this possible? Can a person that has HSV-1, give another person genital herpies?

Answer
Bobby,
Your girlfriend is ABSOLUTELY correct.  If you have the virus present on your lips and you engage in oral sex you CAN definitely pass the virus to her and cause her to have genital herpes.  In fact, type 1 herpes (the kind that causes fever blisters) has become increasingly common in genital herpes.

Make sure that you take precautions to avoid transmission.  Please let me know if you need anymore information.  Remember that you are contagious with any symptoms as well as if you FEEL anything like tingling before you get a blister, etc.
