Question
Hello, I want to move to Merida and conduct my US-based businesses from there.  I have found inconsistent information about the cost of living in Merida.  Some have cited very low prices (relative to US/Europe), where others say Venezuela is very expensive to live.  I live very modestly in the US, eat at home, do not travel much, modest home, etc.  I know it is a difficult question, but can you give me an up to date estimate of the cost of living, either per person, or for a family?  I will live on the local economy, not as a tourist.  (I saw answers from 2006 and 2007 but I know inflation is an issue).

Answer
Hello Mark

It all depends on how you do it. If you rent your home in the USA and have no mortgage to pay, then with that income you can have a similar quality of life but cheaper life costs  in Merida.

If your US Bases businesses produce income in US dollars, then you are King, if your expenses are in Bolivars. The other way around is difficult.

Per person, with USD 1.000 per month, you are fine, for a family of four with USD 3.000 per month, more than fine.

Flag this e-mail as private, send me your e-mail, and I can help you further with exchange rates (USD to VEB)

Go ahead, come to Merida, you can make it.

Best regards,

Francisco
