Subject: Selling American Cars in Venezuela

Question
I am trying to help a friend of mine who owns several car dealerships in Florida who would be interested in contacting a dealership about selling and shipping new cars to Caracas. Can you please give me an idea if this is something that can be done and if so who could we contact there? Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Luz

Does not make sense as Venezuela has an currency exchange control.

You will bring cars into Venezuela (USD), then you pay taxes and other costs (Transportation + insurance) then you sell the cars in Bolivares and when you try to convert the Bolivares (VEB) to USD, you will NOT have access to the official exchange rate (1 USD = 2.15 VEB), your only option will be to go to the parallel market and buy the USD at over 3.40 Bs per USD.

The government gives USD at 2.15 to the assembly plants (ie. Ford, GM, Chrysler, etc...)

Best regards,

F
