Venezuela - Internet payments

Expert: Margie - 10/23/2009

Question
Dear Margie.

My company runs Internet casual game websites in several countries. We have a company in Brazil and another in UK. We recently launched a Spanish speaking website (www.magnojuegos.com) and we realized that Venezuela is where 20% of our users are located. Many of them wants to pay for our service but can't find a way to pay, because they don't have credit cards or because their credit cards are not for international use. How do Venezuelans pays for Internet services in general or to Internet merchants abroad? Is it possible for a foreign company to open a bank account in Venezuela to receive local payments and then transfer the money to UK or Brazil? Do you have any idea on how to receive payments from Venezuelans abroad?

Thank you very much
Marcos

Answer
Hi Marcos,

I know companies like Facebook are already accepting payments in Bolivars, I don't know exactly how they do it, but I can give you an idea.  You can accept payment in Bolivars by opening an account here, and then charge according to the parallel market, that way you can exchange your money in Bolivars on the black market and get your money back. Here the most common thing is to pay through bank deposits or wire transfers. We are not able to make payments to other countries, unless we have a credit card that has been authorized to do so by the government.

I am sure you will have more questions, and I will be here to help, I will look around for other options and let you know if there are any.

Good Luck,

Margie
