Question Dr. Troost:
We need help in locating a "chronic dizziness" specialist, or even better, a multi-disciplinary clinic in the New York City/Long Island area. My mother, who is 87, has until recently, enjoyed a mobile, independent, and productive life style (she cut her own lawn, walked to do all of her shopping, and tended her garden).
For the past several years, she has experienced increasing dizziness ... to the point where it is now almost continuous. Because of her instability, she has had to severely restrict her activities. This, in turn, has had a negative impact on her mental outlook. She's been to an internist, a neurologist, an ENT, ophthalmologist, etc., but no one's been able to explain what's causing her instability. Last week, she had an MRI done on both inner ears (a 1 hour session). The results were negative.
My mother is also dealing with macular degeneration -- one "wet" eye, one "dry". She has had laser surgery done on one eye.
We urgently need to find a doctor, or clinic that specializes in "chronic dizziness/postural instability" coupled with broad geriatric experience. If you know of such a doctor/clinic, or can point us to informational resources that can help us in the search, we would be very grateful.
