Question
In the last month I was diagnosed with mono. I've had most of the symptoms, including fatigue, loss of apeitite, etc. Although I've felt tired, I didn't really have a sensation of being "lightheaded" or a slight feeling of being unbalanced until the past week. It's been persistent, but I haven't felt ill or had any feeling of spinning or dizzyness. Then I read that weakness and fatigue are commonly confused with being lightheaded or being out of balance, something that I had never heard of before.

I did have an attack of vertigo last summer, of which the most severe symptoms of spinning only lasted for about an hour, and then a feeling of slight dizzyness that gradually decreased over the ensuing week. For a while the past week I was afraid it would come back or something.

Given what I've described above in the first paragraph, is it really more likely that this is all due to fatigue because of mono?

And also, out of curiosity, since the vertigo I had last summer didn't last for very long, is it likely to ever come back? Like most people, I'd dread for that to ever happen again.

Thanks a lot.

Answer
Dear Jeremy:

The floating sensation you are experiencing is most likely related to your recent mono.

Your single attack of vertigo last summer was most likely
"vestibular neuronitis" or "labyrinthitis" described on my website at:
http://ivertigo.net/vertigo/verdiagnosis.html#PERIPHERAL

It usually doesn't reoccur, but if it does, they symptoms are usually milder.

Best regards,
