Question Dear Dr. Todd,
I am 53 yrs old. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes last May 2001 and High Cholesteral. I now take Lipitor and Avandia. Prior I was getting real light headed when I stood up. The Dr. prescribed the above medicines.
I started feeling better. Light headedness got a bit better.
I had to get glasses about 15 years ago and at the last I was wearing bifocals. Along about August my eyes started doing tricks and gradually found out my eyes were changing and glasses made seeing miserable. I stopped wearing glasses because I was starting to see okay without them.
Now (beyond 3 feet) I can see as well without glasses as I did about 18 yrs ago. I also had a stigmatism but I don't sense it now.
Can cholestral or blood sugars mess up eyes like that?
Have you heard of anything like this happening?
It's great to not have to wear glasses except wal-mart specials (1.5x) to read with.
Thanks,
John
Answer Dear John:
Yes, changes in blood sugar and possibly cholesterol can affect the lens of the eye and make drastic change in your refraction or glasses. As the values changes there can be changes in your need to have glasses. Most persons over 50 need some plus lenses ( the Wal-mart specials ) to see things at near.
