Subject: Migraine associated vertigo-4 week episode

Question
hello and thank you for your time- I have tested negative for Meniere's Disease and was told I have migraine associated vertigo- hormonally linked.Four weeks ago I had the worst migraine ever (without pain)-with vomiting and unable to open my eyes because of the spinning sensation. Now four weeks later I can focus with each individual eye but not together- is this vertigo still or a complication? I am unable to walk steadily at all using both eyes.I also have colour distortion in the right eye which comes and goes- seeing objects darker and more along the blue spectrum.I have found pressure to the back of the head including lying down will induce it.

Treatment to date has been prochlorperazine in the early days of this episode, anti biotics in case I had a middle ear infection and now propanolol 40mg twice daily for prevention.

The only treatment offered me to date is physiotherapy for a possible neck problem.

Your input would be appreciated

with thanks
Lyndsey

Answer
Dear Lundsey:

Yur situation is extremely complex.  It is clear that some patients with migraine have severe vertigo symptoms that sometimes respond to medication such as prochloperazine. The amount of propanolol you are on for prevention is relatively small and only time will tell if it is effective.

I believe you have persistent vertigo that may be either due to visual distortion or an accompanying inner ear disturbance, but exercise therapy similar to that used for positional vertigo might be of help.  Check out my vertigo website at: www.ivertigo.net and click where it says Exercise Therapy for Vertigo, as a suggestion.

Best regards,
