Question I believe I have benign vertigo but at the time I experienced it, I also had a few experiences with bad odors? accompanied by fluid in the ears. Have been checked for ear and balance problems and am okay, i.e. just benign vertigo. But, recently, I have an ammonia smell when I eat a certain chocolate cookie? At the time I had the vertigo problem, I also had some eye manifestations which my Opthalmologist said was not from my eyes because both eyes were affected.
Just don't understand the bad odor?
Answer Dear Carol:
First of all, sorry I didn't answer sooner, but I was away on a speaking touring talking about headaches.
To answer your question: your description of vertigo sounds definitely like you have bppv or benign positional paroxysmal vertigo. If the odors are exclusively related to eating chocolate then I wonder if that is an entirely separate problem and may be a manifestation of migraine.
Migraine has visual auras and strange sensations ( odors?) and may not be accompanied by headache, but is definitely precipitated by chocolate in certain individuals.
That's about the best I can do, but I am not at all sure of the cause of your symptoms.
