Expert: B. Todd Troost, MD Date: 3/8/2004 Subject: rocking, swaying dizziness
Question 4 months ago, vomited and went dizzy.Hard to explain dizziness, like rocking and swaying, makes me feel ill, hard also to explain, not naseous.Dizzyness is with me 24 hours a day, every day.Been to heaps of drs, ent, etc. They have ruled out anything to do with my ears by sending me for testing at otoneurolgy clinic. I feel pressure in my ears most the time or a crawling feeling in the ears. Also most the time I have throbbing in head and ears. Had mri(don't know if it was for my ears or brain or both, but came back negative.)Last three nights keep waking up every few hours with a severe dizzy attack, only lasts a few seconds, but makes my stomach lurch and i feel ill for about 10 mins after.Could it be aftermath of a viral infection or would that have shown up at the otoneurologist. Can't remember the exact tests but it was hearing,Eng,caloric and a couple of others. I can only function lying on my back reading a book, but it is still horrible, feels like the bed is rocking and lurching.Any ideas? All the doctors i've seen act like they've never seen anyone with this kind of problem before. Please give me some suggestions before i go back to see my local dr.I'm sure he thinks it's all in my mind. It's real, dreadful, sickening, frightening and I feel suicidal about it. Tried valium and stemetil, doesn't work. Any ideas on medication(even herbal)? I live in South Australia. I'm at the end of my rope and need at least some possible explanations of what it could be. Thanks.
Answer Dear Tanya:
I do feel the problem is a residual of an viral inner ear infection leaving you with perhaps a MDD ( Mal de Debarqument) type sensation.
YOu can find some info at: http://www.etete.com/mdd/
Also do the Brandt-Daroff home exercise therapy - it sometimes helps.
