Subject: rocking,swaying

Question
Hi, I was dx with bppv 5 months ago. I have the sensations of rocking,swaying and a jerking feeling. I have been told this is the residual effects of BPPV. I did have the epley done and the spinning stopped. What causes these feelings, my body does not actally move, it feels like I am on a boat in rough seas. Can anything be done to rid this? Thanks, Kathy

Dear Kathy:

YOu feel the rocking or moving because the semicircular canals are being stimulated due to otoliths being in the wrong place.  The brain doesne't know that the moving stimulation comes from the wrong place.  It is confusing, both to you and to the brain.  You can learn about the mechanism of bppv and the treatments on my website:
