Subject: Is my Asus 7600gs dead

Question
Hi, i have a problem with my Asus EN7600gs 512Mb video. The problem started when i was playing half life 2 the game froze i tried to exit the game with no success. I then reset the machine and it started normally, the windows xp logo started then the monitor turned off with the message "No Signal". I restarted and it happened again. I restarted the computer and got to the startup screen where i saw that some of the letters were colored purple instead of white, I started in safe mode uninstalled the drivers reinstalled them, i even reinstalled the os to no result.

The video card seems to boot up with windows vga drivers but when i install nvdia drivers the display turns off as before. I also noticed that my video card was really hot even with a fan directly blowing over it. Oh yeah windows boots fine with my mother board video card enabled.

My system specs are:-
Processor- Intel Pentium D 2.8ghz (Dual Core)
Motherboard- Intel 945GNT
Ram- Kingston 2gb ddr2(512*4)
HardDisk- Hitachi Deskstar 80gb
PSU- 500w
VGA- Asus EN7600gs 512mb ddr2 (no fan only heat sink)
Onboard Sound

Any insight is great appreciated.

Answer
I would say the video card could have problems, or it could be the system's power supply (you didn't specify brand, and yes it does matter). I'd contact Asus and see if you can get a replacement card sent out under warranty, which should let you know if the card is at fault (i.e: you put the new one in, and things work fine), or if its the PSU (i.e: you put the new one in, nothing changes).
